Το Άγιο Όρος (επίσημα: Ιερά Κοινότης Αγίου Όρους ) είναι μια «Αυτόνομη Μοναστική Πολιτεία» εντός της Ελλάδας, (ίσως μοναδική στον κόσμο, με εξαίρεση την κοσμική Λάσα του Θιβέτ), στην χερσόνησο του Άθω της Χαλκιδικής στην Μακεδονία, που θεωρείται κέντρο του Ορθόδοξου μοναχισμού. Κατά τον 5ο αιώνα μ.Χ., σε όλη την Χερσόνησο οι εκκλησίες, προφανώς όλες βασιλικές, θα πρέπει να ήσαν τα κυριαρχούντα δημόσια οικοδομήματα, τόσο ως προς τον αριθμό και το μέγεθος τους, όσο και την πολυτέλεια. Με τις σποραδικές ως τώρα ανασκαφές και τις επιφανειακές έρευνες έχουν εντοπισθεί δεκαεπτά παλαιοχριστιανικές βασιλικές, αριθμός που φαίνεται να απέχει από την τελική εικόνα.
Η πυκνότητα των ναών και οι αντίστοιχοι (και πολύ περισσότεροι) οικισμοί της περιόδου αυτής δείχνουν ότι η Παλλήνη (Κασσάνδρα) διήλθε περίοδο οικονομικής ευρωστίας από τον 4ον ως και τις αρχές του 6ου αιώνος.
